I LOVED GENERAL CONFERENCE!
I think my favorite one liner was
"There is no right way to do the wrong thing" - Becky Craven
I love that because we can't rationalize our actions. When we know something has to get done you just gotta do it, there won't be any better alternatives.
This week I went on more exchanges. This time it was with Elder Barth. We had a really really neat experience that I'm cautious to share because the series of events that followed mean so much to me.
We decided we needed to tract and invite all we met to watch general conference, we had little fliers we printed off and everything.
We knocked a door of a man that stopped going to church when he was 16, he was about 70 something now. His sister that lives down a few blocks has served a ton of missions with her husband and is the most genuine person ever. This sister told us that we could stop by but that we would probably get yelled at. She also expressed to us that one of his grandsons completed suicide just a few weeks ago so he'd probably be very upset.
"Nevertheless [we] went forth, and as [we] came near unto the house"
we didn't
"[know] the things which we should do"
(1 Nephi 4:6-7)
Then we knocked,
Then he answered.
He scowled and stood there.
We asked the typical questions and he told us "he wasnt a good 'mormon' "
We told him we didnt care in the least and were just happy to be talking with him.
He then started to get teary eyed
I then told him, "Sir, there's no coincidence that we are here right now. We know God cares for you and he is answering your unspoken prayers.."
He said "excuse me"
Turned around and left into the house, he came back sobbing with a tissue.
Told me, "my grandson is your age and recently passed, you sound and say the exact things as him"
I gave him a huge, wet, cryey hug. It was more of a him falling and holding onto me, than a proper hug.
He emotionally thanked us for the visit and said we were more than welcome to come by anytime.
I then felt prompted to promise him in the Name of Jesus Christ that if he listened to general conference whatever talk he listened to would answer some of his questions.
He said, "I will, I'm angry with my Heavenly Father right now but I will. I'll tell my sister you stopped by."
After another hug and an emotional goodbye we parted ways.
We went straight to his sisters home and let her know.
She then started to cry
her husband comes to the door kind of startled.
We told her the story of what he said and she told us no one has had that long if a conversation with him about church in a VERY long time. Not even her. (We weren't there even 20 minutes)
She thanked us and we went on our way, very excited to see what Heavenly Father was going to have said in General Conference.
THE 3RD TALK of the Saturday morning session Elder Hales of the 70 goes up and talks about how
Heavenly Father is aware of us and will answer our prayers
How prayers are answered by means of others
That "this too shall pass"
That we need to trust in Gods timing
That He has greater blessings later for us.
And then he quotes Mosiah 2:41 which explains that those that keep the commandments of God are blessed in ALL things, both Temporal and Spiritual. That we should look at those that are truly happy and see what they're doing right and copy it.
For "[God] is no respect(er) of persons"
(Romans 2:11)
It doesn't matter what we've done or how bad we think we are, when we decide to come back God will lovingly let us back into his presence.
I KNOW that this talk was for our old friend on the door step. I pray that he has listened to it. We will be going by to see if he has, if not, I'm VERY excited to watch it with him.
God is aware of us! He knows us! He wants to help! Let Him!
I love all of you!
